February 21/25

Div. 13 really enjoyed The Wizard of Oz, I hope they have talked about this at home, it really was an amazing production for high school students.  The drama department at Westview really seems to provide an incredible platform for students to explore various aspects of theater, from acting to stage production. It's such a valuable opportunity for anyone passionate about the arts.

We are doing poems instead of books for this Reader's Workshop rotation.  Hopefully your child read to you their poem which is in their poetry book, please have them read and practise this daily. Speaking of kindness, Pink Shirt day is on Wednesday.  Students are encouraged to wear pink and this year we are doing a special Kindness Parade after the assembly. We will be walking as a school (with our buddies) to the city park next to Laityview, where their school will be lining the paths waiting for us. Fairivew wants to spread some kindness into our neighbourhood community! If you are available to volunteer for this walk please let me know as soon as possible.  Thanks!

We are finishing up our owl unit and your children are excited to show you their lap books and the owl story that they wrote and illustrated at their upcoming conferences.  Sign up for the conferences will be on the portal this Tuesday, February 25.  The conferences are Wed., March 12 in the afternoon and Thursday, March 13 all day.  These conferences will be a  30-minute commitment (1st 15 minutes with your child in the hall to celebrate and go through their work and then up to 15 minutes with me and your child to discuss their report card and set goals for our next term).  If none of these times work for you please email and let me know when you are available and we can make arrangements.

Scholastic Book Fair is coming to Fairview.  On Friday, Feb. 18 we will get to preview the books and bring home a wish list.  Monday, March 3 will be our shopping day in school hours but there are other times that you could come with your child on the parent portal.

March 7 - Skating... Please sign up as soon as possible and send in the money for skates and helmets.  We currently are short drivers, so if any of you can help out please indicate so on the portal or let me know.  Thanks!

February 14/25

Thanks to our PAC the pancake breakfast was enjoyed by all!

Happy Valentine's Day!   Div. 13 were very excited handing out, receiving and reading all their valentines!  I was proud of the kindness that they shared, the fact they realized and appreciated the valentines that they got from their peers.

Thanks to both Michael and Mila for delivering Div. 12 & 13 special hugs to their great grandma's senior homes.

100 Day activities we are completing over 2 days, Thursday we had fun stations in the gym with Mrs. Siroyvak's class and then we had a variety of 100 activities in the two classrooms.  On Tuesday we will continue to do math activities and finish up our special 100 projects.

This will be another short week for spelling.  The students that explored Spelling City on the useful Links were excited to share what they had done, everyone should check it out as it's a fun way to practise!

This round of Reader's Workshop your child will be bringing home a Kindness Poem insteaad of a book. This will be kept in their Poetry book, please practise this daily as they will be presenting these to the class.

February 7/25

Last day for candy gram orders is tomorrow Monday, February 10th.

In the Poetry book your child has brought home a Valentine's heart which is homework over the next two weeks.  Please check out the Spelling City link, I showed this to students and parents at Family Reading.

We had an exciting week with snow, an amazing author visit and Metis Jigging!

Tuesday morning I extended Your Time so Div. 13 could just play in the snow, realizing quickly that it wasn't snowman building snow they made snow angels and laid in them looking up at the clouds and discussing what they could see, their imaginations were amazing.  Then they rolled down the little hill, played tag and made the most of having the field totally to themselves! (pictures will be added soon - sorry I left the ipad at school:(  )

On Wednesday the students really enjoyed Ren Louie's (a BC author from Victoria) presentation on his two books about his life plus his drumming!

Friday we had Metis Jigging.  Kehew-Neepin Roussel taught and danced with the class.  We all learned not only was it fun, it was a good workout!  Kehew carries and honors the teachings passed down from her father and her sister, keeping their traditions alive and helping students connect with the cultural legacy, resilience and the joy of Metis traditions.  I tried to include a video but couldn't so next family reading I'll show it to you.
