Sept. 28

Fairview's Terry Fox run was a success!

Mila did an amazing job speaking both at the assembly and to our class, her presentation was very powerful!  Donations will still be accepted next week, please send in cash donations or online donations can be made at https://schools.terryfox.ca/73520

*Div. 13 and our buddy class are organizing Fairview's Food Drive for Friends in Need.  Please bring in non-perishable foods Oct. 2 - Oct. 9th. We really hope to make a difference to those who are not as fortunate as us!  We made posters on Friday to put on the boxes and throughout the school, Div. 13 will also be doing daily announcements encouraging Fariview to help their comunity.

More Exploration Fun!

Div. 13 are starting to settle into our classroom routines.  Thank you for helping your child to return their planners daily in their plastic bags and their Poetry, Songs, Math Games and More duotangs on Mondays. Every Monday is our library book exchange, student are able to keep them home for one week.  Please use the large ziplock at all times to protect the book.

Thanks to everyone who has paid the school supply and planner fees, and for filling out the consent forms on the parent portal.  If you have not done these things please do so asap.  Also if you haven't had an opportunity to sign up for one of our snack celebrations, please try to do so this week, or if you can't I will discuss it with your child.  Thanks everyone for your support with this, as soon as it is finalized I will post it on the page above plus send reminders.

Our Name Boggle is going very well.  The students are becoming more skilled at creating lots of words with each special helper's names.  I'd also like to thank families for continuing this activity at home and then returning them. Everyone has found more words and as a class we are realizing that some names/letters can definitely make more words and those with a s then you can make words plural!

Thanks to Gavin's mom who has agreed to provide and cut the wood for our Thanksgiving craft.  If Mrs. Sirovyak's class doesn't have a volunteer I will reach out to one of you that also volunteered.  Thanks for your support with this.

Family Reading every Friday

Saturday, September 14, 2024

Friday the 13th!

Div. 13 has had a busy first week; getting to know each other, learning expectations and also getting organized.  Thanks to all of you that sent back forms and sent in school supply money.   If you haven't had a chance yet please send in the GREEN Getting Acquainted Form, the BLUE verification form as soon as possible.  This year there is a contest for the class that returns all the verification form the fastest, so please send these in and maybe Div. 13 will win a price!  Also if possible please ensure you fill out all the consent forms on the parent portal and send in inside shoes/running shoes asap (especially with our change in the weather!)

Thanks to everyone that was able to come for Family Reading it was wonderful to see so many parents.  I understand that many of you have to be at work and are unable to attend or can only come occasionally, please be assured that your child can always join another parent.

Each morning we do Name Boggle, finding as many words that can be made out of our special helper's name. This is an excellent literacy activity and the students are already very good at it.  When it is your child's special helper day they will bring their sheet home, if you could help them to find even more words that would be great. Take the time you need but please return as they like to share their results with their classmates and we will keep them for their memory books.  I hope you enjoy this family activity, it definitely gets your brain working and helps the students with rhyming, reading and writing skills!Name Boggle.

First Letter Home for Div. 13!

 September 10, 2024

Dear Parents of Division 13 Students,

My name is Sheralyn Rowledge-Toscani and I have been a teacher at Fairview for many years, largely in the primary grades. I am really looking forward to a great year! I’d like to take this opportunity to welcome you and your children to my class and answer some questions you may have about this school year.  Div. 13 has 20 students.

School supplies have been done in BULK, we do communal supplies (other than duotangs/ writing books).  The cost of these supplies are $60.00, this includes supplies and your child’s planners. $60.00 should be paid either online through the parent portal (this may not be available yet as Fairivew has had endless technical issues but it will be up soon) or in cash (please send in a ziplock labelled with your child’s name).

*Students need a pair of sturdy running “indoor” shoes.  These will be used for gym and the classroom - this helps keep our school clean.

*Planners will provide home and school communication throughout the year, and where your child can record their home reading and will be coming home this week.

*An extra set of clothes (including socks and underwear) is suggested in case of any type of accidents. (bathroom/puddles!).

*Fairview has a pack in/pack out lunch, these can be in either a paper bag or clean container. These will stay in their backpacks except during eating times.  I recommend that you send a napkin each day so that you limit food contact with the table and also a ziplock to put banana peels etc in.. There is no sharing of any food.  Please send a labelled water bottle for your child as that is so much safer than the water fountains. Water refill stations are open.

*Please update the verificiation form with any allergy information.  If your child has a serious allergy, please email me and request the medical information documents from the office.

*Div. 13 will be spending lots of time outside.  Rain or shine we will go out for learning, and physical activity.  Students will also be out for recess and lunch; this is the West Coast!  Please ensure your child has appropriate clothing and footwear for all kinds of weather.  Fairview is so lucky to have our forest but as you know it gets wet and mucky!  Rain boots are recommended because as you know children love puddles and mud!

*We will often have our classroom door and windows open to improve the ventilation, please send a hoodie or a sweater so if your child is cold, they have something warm.

*I have attached a questionnaire (green sheet) to this letter that I would like you to fill out and return as soon as possible.  These give me valuable information and insights about your child that sometimes would take me months to discover.  Thanks

*If you’d like to volunteer in the class please email me.  Thank you in advance.

Division 13’s Schedule:

*Library will be on Monday, your child’s library book will come home in a labelled ziplock bag and should be returned weekly.

*Family Reading will be on Fridays 8:30-8:45. Starting this Friday.

*Our gym days are Wednesday & Friday but as most of you know exercise and movement breaks are important every day, please ensure that your child is dressed in comfortable clothes so that they are able to fully participate in all activities.

We also have Forest Fun booked for Wednesday afternoons so will be going out rain or shine.

*Fine Arts (music/drama) with Mr. Saul is on Tuesday & Thursday.

*Division 13 has their own blog – the link is https://srtfairview24-25.blogspot.com

This can also be accessed by going to Fairview Elementary, then Classroom Websites and then Ms Rowledge-Toscani. This is the main method of communication in our class.  There is a monthly calendar plus I generally update it weekly (usually Friday but for sure by Sunday!). I will try to send an email each week as a reminder. Please check regularly so you know what we have been up to and what is coming up.

I like to include photos of the students in action but to do this, parents must agree to outside media.  This is with several other forms that you will need to complete asap on the parent portal.

I am excited to spend this school year with your children and I am also looking forward to working with you, the parents – partners in your child’s education.

I will do my best to keep you informed on what is going on in the classroom.  If you have any questions please do ask, either write a note in the planner, or call the school at 604-465-9331.  You can also reach me by email at  sheralyn_rowledge-toscani@sd42.ca but please note I don’t have a chance during the day to check it but will get back to you asap and if it is something urgent it is best to call the school.

I can’t wait to meet and get to know all of you!

Sheralyn Rowledge-Toscani

***Due to the fact there are often email issues, I am sending a hard copy of this letter home with the students. If you didn’t receive it by email as well, please let me know as soon as possible so we can rectify this problem.  Thanks

October 27/24

Interim reports will be coming home on Tuesday.  This is a combination of their self assessment as well as my evaluation as to how they are ...
